dc.description.abstract The aim of this study was to determine whether there is any remarkable pragmatic transfer of refusals from Zulu to Afrikaans. Attention was given to the manner in which decisions, requests, invitations, suggestions and offers are refused. The findings show that there is a difference in the manner in which refusals from Zulu to Afrikaans are used. Both Afrikaans and Zulu have semantic formulas which differ from each other. Zulu first language speakers transfer the sociolinguistic patterns of their mother tongue on to their Afrikaans. It is this pragmatic transfer which can cause misunderstanding and miscommunication between Afrikaans first language and Zulu first language speakers. It can also lead to negative stereotyping of the speaker and / or the whole community. In addition to the discussion of the findings, the usefulness of the results of the research for second language teaching as well as a few shortcomings of the research are highlighted and discussed. en
