dc.description.abstract That which assures Andr Chnier a role as geographic landmark in the history of French poetry is his new conception of the nature of poetry, especially Greek poetry. He was the first to rewrite, in their own form, the legendary adventures of the ancient Hellades. Thus, his verse permits the reconstitution of an entire Greek universe, suggested by colours and smells which surpass the old concept of antique imitation. The itinerary of the Byzantine poet was not only his own, but also that which characterised the literary activity of his whole family. For this reason, it is attempted to trace an objective and historic vision through the works of not only Andr Chnier, but also those of his mother, Elisabeth and father, Louis. The study aims to examine the Byzantine and neo-Hellenic heritage in the work of Andr Chnier, especially where a comparison with that of his mother produces some illumination. The methods used are those of literary history, with the emphasis on analysis and non-evaluative observation. The study journeys into the Orient, to show when and how Andr Chnier discovered Greece, and the role which it played in his life. The stories of his childhood, his reading, and diverse allusions in books and painting are examined. There is also a systematic study of his texts, their themes and their contemporary concerns, as influenced by those of Madame Chnier. en
