dc.description.abstract An exploratory, descriptive and explicatory study was undertaken in order to investigate the experience of parents following the death of a child, as well as the concomitant bereavement process. The need for bereavement counseling services for parents following the death of a child was studied and evaluated. This study was initiated by the description and study of the existing literature on the topic. The empirical study was based on the investigator's observation and experience of parents who have lost children to death since 1990. This study had the aim of determining the experience of bereavement of parents following the death of a child. In order to imbue the study with practical value, a further aim was to compile and present an aid programme for parents in the shape of a programme of bereavement counseling for parents after the death of a child. Two aspects were therefore dealt with in the study, viz. the process of mourning and the process of bereavement counseling. The process of mourning was dealt with by giving attention, in the first place, to the central issue of death. Knowledge about the problems centering on death is essential for further understanding of the process of mourning and the further discussion in this dissertation. The course of the mourning process was discussed in order to introduce the reader to the different feelings and reactions which constitute an integral part of the mourning process. The emotional experience of parents with regard to grief was dealt with in detail with a view to the compilation and presentation of a bereavement counseling programme. A bereavement counseling programme could not be compiled before attention had been given to the concept of bereavement counseling as such. Needs of parents following the death of a child had to be documented before a meaningful bereavement counseling programme could be compiled. It was concluded that the mourning process which is suffered by parents following the death of a child can not be dealt with without the therapist having knowledge and an understanding of the mourning process. Bereavement counseling and the presentation of bereavement counseling programme constitute a service which offers parents of deceased children the opportunity to work through the mourning process meaningfully. en
