dc.description.abstract Explains basic problems surrounding piano study for beginners. Prominent authors and pianists note the importance of the use of bigger levers, such as the whole arm, as sound initiators. It is shown that the use of pure finger technique can cause damage in the beginning stages of piano lessons, and have a negative influence on technique. The correct use of bigger levers enhances technique and eliminates possible injury. The aim of this study is to determine to what extent this viewpoint is supported in beginner piano literature, and to find and organise existing useful material in a structured framework. The various lever movements are identified, i.e. free fall, float off, float in, kick off, rotation, wrist movement, and finger movement, with the free fall using the largest levers. The traditional methods of James Bastien, Joan Last, Fanny Waterman & Marion Harewood, and Tobias Matthay are analysed to determine to what extent bigger levers are used in their respective methods. Modern approaches that use the cluster and black key methods are investigated. It is found that the use of bigger levers in both traditional and non-traditional methods is infrequent and inconsistent. The material is organised to form a structured framework for the accommodation of lever usage in beginner piano literature. en
