dc.description.abstract Argues that training and development may provide the answer to work place changes by creating an awareness of and sensitivity for cultures and related values and norms while simultaneously marketing the philosophy and subculture of the business. In this manner the common values and norms within the business are promoted and sound labour relations facilitated. The training programme developed for low-level employees emphasises the acquisition and development of skills, while it establishes norms, based on values, for standards of behaviour with a view to realistic relations and optimal production levels. In order to communicate suitable values and norms in support of sound labour relations, proper planning and establishment of objectives within the framework of the business philosophy is essential. According to the Scriptures, the purposes of labour are worship on the one hand, and service to and the welfare of one's fellow human beings on the other. These are the principles on which the norms of fair labour practice and sound industrial action are founded. Training and development may bring about socialisation in these norms if approached with sensitivity and circumspection. en
