dc.description.abstract Johannes Gerhardus Marthinus Dreyer was born on 10 December 1892. He matriculated at the High School Gymnasium in Potchefstroom. He completed his BA BD degree and then left for the Rijks University, Utrecht, Netherlands for further studies. He returned in 1924 and served as a minister in Lydenburg/ Roossenekal, Bethal-Ermelo-Chrissiesmeer from 1928 to 1937, and in Potchefstroom for 41 years until his retirement. Ds Dreyer showed leadership qualities as a young man. As a student he was secretary of the student council and as a minister he played a prominent role in cultural, educational and social matters in all the communities he served in. Nationally, he was involved in the Simon van der Stel Foundation, the Netherlands Zuid Afrikaanse Study Group and the South African Academy for Science and Art. He served on the synod and the Curatory for Theological Training, and was editor of Almanak and Die Hervormer, his church's official paper. He was involved in compiling the first Afrikaans psalm book and in the translation of the Bible. He played a significant role in the missionary vision of the church. Ds Dreyer was honoured by various organisations and received various awards. He died on 26 October 1988 at the age of 96 years. en
