dc.description.abstract The main objective of this study was the development of guidelines to assist supervisors in the complex, dynamic and turbulent field of labour relations. The total first-line supervisor population of a division of a chemical company was approached in the study. Questionnaires were completed by all the supervisors under the general guidance of the author. The supervisors were white employees. It was found that the functions of the supervisor are subject to a number of conflicting pressures and duties. Add to these the complex demands of the broader socio-political environment, and one is essentially looking at a man who experiences a great deal of role conflict and role ambiguity. A priority area for change is the clarification of supervisory responsibilities. Another important factor is the schooling of the supervisor in industrial relations, to enable him to cope with the management-worker-union situation. The role of the supervisor is in urgent need of reconsideration, for the sake of the supervisor, himself, productivity and labour relations. He should be well informed and well schooled in all aspects of his work. en
