dc.description.abstract This research examines the delegation of tasks and how the principal promotes staff development by means of delegating. The principal is educated as a teacher rather than a manager. The role of the principal in school management activities and in the application of staff development is discussed. Several guidelines concerning staff development are given. Management development, from the inexperienced teacher to the potential principal, is discussed. Delegating as a management function includes responsibility and authority. When tasks are delegated, certain principles must be adhered to. The advantages and disadvantages of delegating and ways of improving delegating are stated. Certain conclusions are drawn and recommendations made. en
