dc.description.abstract Discusses the factors which must be kept in mind when implementing a participative management style. The profile of the explosives organisation (SMX Manufacturers and Distributors (Pty) Ltd) is examined in order to identify areas such as teamwork, organisation culture, communication and organisation dynamics. The identification of the strategic profile points out the opportunities and threats which can be encountered in the participative management process. Motivation theories, and their importance for the workers' role in the organisation, are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of a participative management style are examined. An organisational diagnosis has been carried out to develop strategies to overcome the problems in the organisation. The object of the diagnosis is to establish the employees' perception of organisational functioning in order to establish negative areas and to take steps to correct them. Experience has shown that problems relating to motivation and co-ordination can be solved by: the training of supervisors; worker participation in decision making; teamwork; the establishment of key performance areas; and effective communication. The stimulation of a participative management style is discussed. The completion of quality work teams and the team processes on the different hierarchical levels of the organisation are presented. A guide for participative management based on quality work teams is developed. The conclusions and recommendations are that SMX Manufacturers and Distributors (Pty) Limited should embark on a participative management style to be able to meet the challenges of a changing environment. en
