dc.description.abstract A proposed programme, combing the principles of music therapy and principles of facilitating psychological growth, has been constructed and its effect quantatively evaluated in terms of dependent variables. It is hypothesised that the successful application of the programme will be associated with statistically significant changes in the following directions; increased scores in dimensions concerning positive mental health; increased scores in characteristics of optimal psychological functioning, particularly characteristics of intrapersonal and interpersonal optimal functioning. The research design involves a random sample of which: no subject was to have been a music student; no subject was to have a qualification in music higher than grade V; no subject was to have a s core higher than ten on the Beck depression scale; and all subjects had to be willing to participate in the project. Measurement has been done in two phases - pre-test and post-test. Completion of the music therapy programme is associated with statistically significant higher scores in dimensions concerning positive mental health, and increased scores in characteristics of optimal psychological functioning. The effect of listening to music is not comparable to the effect of music therapy. The results suggest the applicability of music therapy for facilitating psychological growth. en
