dc.description.abstract This study was mainly undertaken in order to determine the effectiveness of the Botswadi Programme as development programme. The aims, formulated in order to obtain the primary objectives, are as follows: To provide an explanation of the implementation of the single system design as well as the survey method; to identify the needs and problems of black mothers; to evaluate the total Botswadi Programme by means of the survey method; to measure the growth of the members by means of the single system design; and to investigate group work as a work method of the Botswadi Programme. In order to attain these objectives, a literature study was undertaken, firstly to ascertain if any other previous research had been done on group work with black women. In the second place it was also important to determine whether the study was viable and could be justified. Thirdly it was important that research methods and procedures were studied. The single system design was used where ten black women (mothers) were involved for seven meetings over a period of four months (April to July 1996) during which time the Botswadi Programme was presented. The postal questionnaire was used to obtain information from fifty trained Botswadi Programme presenters. Thirty questionnaires were received back, while twenty did not respond. This information was used to determine the effectiveness of the current programme as well as to make possible changes. From the study it was evident that the black woman and mother has certain problems and needs. Traditions and practices among the black population play an important role with regard to problems and needs to black woman. It is important that these differences in traditions and practices of the respective population groups should be taken into account in order to render effective social work services to the black woman. The current Botswadi Programme functions well as a basic development programme. From the study it became evident, however, that the programme could be adapted and extended in order to establish a more effective programme that will develop all levels of parenthood. It is important, however, that adaptations to the programme should be done discreetly in order not to disturb the basic programme. Group work as a work method for the Botswadi Programme is effectively utilised and enables each group member to function optimally within his or her own circumstances. The development of the black woman results in her family developing as a whole and the social functioning of the whole family improving. en
