dc.description.abstract On the eve of the Anglo-Boer War, the state of health services and nursing in the Boer Republics compared poorly with those in Europe. The organisation of medical services in the ZAR was neglected, and the introduction of medical services was delayed in the Orange Free State. The lack of central control forced the Transvaal Red Cross to try to provide military medical services, but without success. The supply of fully manned ambulance units from foreign Red Cross organisations was probably responsible for averting a medical disaster. During the early phases of the war, the hospitals met the medical demands. Doctors gained valuable experience and the need for trained military nurses was recognised. Organised military medical services collapsed by September1900, and for the remaining months of the war, the Republican forces had to cope with only a few commando doctors and further make do with folk remedies. Despite this , the Anglo-Boer War made an important contribution to military medical science. The lessons learned showed the importance of organisation and central control, and of providing mobile medical services. The need in future for specialisation, the realisation of the importance of sanitation, the ability to cope with endemic illnesses and the need for formal training of nurses all crystallised. en
