dc.description.abstract The private medical practitioner experiences difficulty in practising profitably in present circumstances. There are three main reasons: the economic recession; the sharp rise in the running cost of a medical practice; and the fact that the tariffs of medical funds have not increased in proportion to tariff increases set by the Medical Association of South Africa. From the study it was concluded that the private medical practice should be seen as a small business and management as such. The medical practitioner, however, lacks the necessary knowledge. The strategic planning process for a small business was therefore studied and a theoretical model proposed. The medical practitioner can use it with minor alterations to suit his particular requirements. en
