dc.description.abstract Studies the derivational process of tautosyllabic consonant clusters in Tiberian Hebrew within three different theoretical frameworks. Firstly, the way in which traditional pre-generative grammars of Biblical Hebrew treated these words is studied. It is indicated that these traditional grammars do not give an adequate explanation for the derivational process of these words, because of the non-awareness of methodological issues. The study considers the way in which the formation of these words is explained by traditional generative phonology. Two opposing explanations are compared and evaluated. The first of these postulates different possible phonetically determined values for the epenthetic vowel in Tiberian Hebrew, while the second identifies only one epenthetic vowel inserted in all phonetic contexts, namely schwa. It is found that neither of these two theories offers the best possible explanation for the derivation of these words. A new theory, consisting of the best aspects of each of the two theories, is then formulated. The inadequacies of the traditional generative explanation are indicated, the most important of these being that it misses certain linguistically significant generalisations. Different theories of syllabification from a non-linear approach are studied, and the best possibility is chosen and applied to Tiberian Hebrew. It is found that the site of vowel epenthesis can indeed be predicted by this syllabification process. The implications of this for the formulation of phonological rules for the derivation of Tiberian Hebrew words ending on underlying consonant clusters are indicated. en
