dc.description.abstract Indicates the availability of water and the demand therefor in the Klerksdorp-Orkney-Stilfontein area (KOS area) and its influence on economic development. The water-supply and consumption of the economical sector, which consists of the mines, commerce and industry, and government and provincial institutions, and of the household sector, comprising the local population, is indicated. Surface water, obtained mainly from the Vaal River, constitutes the most important part of the KOS area's water resources. Underground water is found in the mining area and is used by the mines on a large scale. In 1984, mining constituted 86,59% of the area's water consumption. Mining also made the largest contribution to the area's GGP. Given the predominant importance of gold to the economy of the area, the lifetime expectation of the gold mines is the most important factor for establishing the future demand for water in the area. According to estimates from the mines, it appears that the mines' demand for water has been stabilised and that some of the mines will have been phased out by the year 2000. The municipalities' estimates indicate a growing demand for the future, but their present consumption represents only approximately 15% of the total consumption for the area. It would, therefore, appear that the KOS area will not be needing more water by the year 2000. Expansions to provide for the expected demand for water up to the year 1995 have been completed. The economic development of the KOS area will thus not be impeded by water shortages. en
