dc.description.abstract The effective functioning of a department in a secondary school depends on the smooth integration of the newly appointed head of department. The aim of this research was to determine the problems that may be experienced by the newly appointed head of department. The conclusions reached from the research are that newly appointed heads of departments have difficulty finding time for all the responsibilities attached to the post. Most schools do not have an official induction programme. The majority of newly appointed heads of department perceived the need for one, and indicated a preference that it should be conducted by members of the school's management team. en
