Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to determine whether a child with specific learning disabilities also experiences emotional problems such as a poor self-image. Special reference is made to the aid class pupil. It is clear from the frequency and percentage tables compiled from the data analysis that most aid class pupils do have a poor self-image. A questionnaire confirmed what was indicated in the literature: perceptual and academic problems, certain behaviour patterns and the bearing of these factors on self-image. Similar confirmation was obtained concerning the influence of the home and school. It can be stated from the study that an adequate self-image is a pre-requisite for optimal learning and the actualization of potential. For this reason the initial orthodidactical assistance to the aid class pupil should include the acquisition of a positive self-image in order to prepare the child effectively and emotionally for the intensified learning process in the aid class.
