dc.description.abstract South African organizations are currently exposed to instability and sociopolitical tension. In order to facilitate collaboration among groups with conflicting needs in an organizational context - and to maintain productivity and profitability - the development, maintenance and proactive utilization of a healthy communication climate is essential. This research had a dual purpose; to determine whether there is a relationship between the communication climate in an organization and the behaviour of its members, and to describe such a relationship. Primary findings indicated that there is indeed a relationship between communication climate and behaviour. People who evaluated the climate positively were more open and enthusiastic about upward and horizontal communication, while others were more open and enthusiastic about downward communication. Furthermore, people who evaluated the climate positively were more motivated to communicate production and maintenance related messages, and they utilized communication media more frequently than colleagues who evaluated the climate negatively. en
