dc.description.abstract The main purpose of this study was to determine whether the Randburg Town Council's existing computerized management information system provides the data required for the efficient execution of the management task of the Town Engineer's Department. A secondary purpose was to review a number of strategies for the determination of information needs. Results clearly indicate that the accounting system does not satisfy the management information needs of the Town Engineer's Department. There is a lack of data regarding, for instance, unit costs, standards for budgeting and control purposes, the efficiency of the various resources, the causes of deviations from standards and plans, the value of the resources utilized and the comparable physical extent of the projects executed. The literature study showed that, although it is no easy task to determine information requirements, certain strategies can nevertheless be implemented to address this key problem. en
