dc.description.abstract During the past five years there has been a dramatic change in the attitude of farm labour. In industrial agriculture, strikes are a day-to-day occurrence, while the traditional relationship between the farmer and his employees is disappearing. It is well known that representation in farming areas across South Africa is one of the main goals of trade unions. This survey was conducted in order to stress the importance of the matter under discussion, and also to investigate the perception of the white farmer with regard to unionism and its possible spread to agriculture. The survey focused on region J in the Western Transvaal where a total of 80 farmers were approached. By means of a questionnaire and unstructured interviews, all data were assembled and analysed. The major findings indicate that the farmers are totally against union representation of black farmworkers, and that there is a great demand for knowledge regarding labour management in the agricultural sector. en
