dc.description.abstract Determines, by means of a literature study and practical survey, the criteria that can be applied to determine the success of a career exhibition, and whether this is an effective method of passing on information. The career exhibition is a specialised exhibition directed at passing on information concerning career prospects for learners, students or any other person who has to make a career choice. The career exhibition gives people the opportunity to discuss with a forum of representative employers a variety of careers, bursaries and career opportunities. There are two types of career exhibitions in this country. One is the big Careers 2000 Exhibitions co-organised by the Department of Manpower and the Chambers of Industry in various large centres. The other is the smaller, decentralised exhibition. The Potchefstroom 150 Career Exhibition in 1988, an example of a career exhibition, became part of the empirical investigation for this study. The criteria for a successful career exhibition were applied to the Potchefstroom 150 Career Exhibition. It is evident that this example was a successful method of information distribution in career guidance. The practical problems influencing the success of a career exhibition include the lack of co-operation and communication between the most important role players. It is concluded that the career exhibition is an effective method of information distribution in career guidance, provided that the criteria for organising an effective career exhibition are met. en
