dc.description.abstract This research was conducted to determine the exact nature of the workload of the head of department; agriculture in Transvaal secondary schools. The empirical investigation showed that he spends too little time, with detrimental effect, on the following activities; studying of scientific farming practices, planning, exercise control and computer operation. With regard to most of his other tasks, he is satisfied with the amount of time devoted to them. He prefers to spend less time on certain extramural, non-educational work and work that can be handled equally well by administrative personnel and farm foremen. It was found that the head of department: agriculture experiences a work overload - which is the reason for his not carrying out his responsibilities properly. en
