dc.description.abstract The main object of this study was to evaluate Seboni's novels and to determine whether they meet the general requirements for biographies of high literary standard. A feature that comes to light throughout the study of the novels is the recurrence of a highly moralistic style that at times adversely affects the coherence of the plot. The process of communication in biography is of paramount importance, and the relationship between the biographer and his subject cannot be ignored. It is particularly true of Seboni's biographies since all his subjects are acquaintances of his. This factor, however, places him at a disadvantage at times. A redeeming feature is that Seboni never makes an attempt to compete for publicity with his subject, and this culminates in an excellent portrayal of his characters. It is clear that Seboni is an undisputed pioneer in Setswana biography since no interest had previously been shown in this genre. His laudable effort should serve as a guiding star to prospective authors in Setswana in particular and in African languages in general. en
