Abstract:
In Heidelberg, West Germany, the gifted child has access to virtually all libraries . Information and information sources are freely available and the whole system is aimed at providing service, with academic and research outputs as the top priority, without discriminating against age. The German library situation enables the gifted child to make use of all opportunities to enrich his knowledge. South Africa, specifically the Transvaal, cannot afford a situation where its major resources, its gifted children, is not fully exploited. Everything possible should be done to satisfy the information needs of the gifted child. This study makes a number of recommendations and gives certain guidelines regarding the information needs of the gifted child. Educational authorities should take these recommendations into consideration when planning the education of the gifted children in order to do justice to them within the education system.
