dc.description.abstract This research aims at the introduction of oral interpretation as an aesthetic performing art in its own right. From a study of primary and secondary sources it has emerged that there are divergent opinions about the status of oral interpretation as an acknowledged art form. Following the practical presentation of an oral programme "Die Swakkere Vat" to several audiences, the conclusion was reached that oral interpretation as an aesthetic performing art consits of elements of both art and craft. The distinguishing characteristics of genre-division into poetry, prose and drama are outlined to prove that a fundamental knowledge of literature is essential for the performer. en
