dc.description.abstract The purpose of this research was to determine the connection between the self-concept and mathematical achievement of Afrikaans-speaking standard 7 pupils. The part played by sex, IQ and personality in mathematical achievement was also examined. The target group consisted of 105 standard 7 girls. The study could discover no significant connection between the non-academic self-concept and the mathematical achievement of the pupils. Significant correlations were, however, found between academic and mathematical self-concepts and mathematical scholastic achievements. The mathematical self-concepts of both the boys and girls in the target group influenced their mathematical achievement to a greater extent than did their academic self-concepts. The mathematical self-concepts of the girls had a greater influence on their mathematical achievement than was the case with the boys. en
