dc.description.abstract The status of economics as a school subject has declined to an extent where some Educationalists are the opinion that it should be dropped from the curriculum. However, knowledge of economics is essential in a developing country such as South Africa. It enables the individual to understand economic realities and to further prosperity for himself and the community. School is the ideal place for learning and teaching economics: economics ought therefore to be retained and developed as a school subject. The aim of this study was to determine whether certain aspects of objective assessment techniques in matriculation examinations are being applied in a manner that is didactically correct for economics higher grade. Examination papers of the four provincial education departments for 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990 were analyzed and compared. The finding of this study is that objective assessment techniques are underutilized, and do not lead to a valid assessment of either the item components of examination papers or the papers as a whole. en
