dc.description.abstract The area under study consists of the towns of Belfast, Machadodorp and Waterval-Boven in the Eastern Transvaal. The aims of the study were to investigate the functional interdependence of these towns; to determine the extent of their decline, and to examine the concept of the dispersed city as a working strategy to arrest decline. The manufacturing linkages, shopping patterns, commercial structure, bus service, education, health services, forms of administrative control, government corporations, provincial and local administration and recreational patterns were taken into consideration to determine the interaction. The conclusion was reached that the collective utilization of certain functions gives an indication that the concept of the dispersed city has already been put into practice to some extent; and that by the further extension of functional interdependence the decline of towns in the study area can be combated. en
