dc.description.abstract Administers the Rotter Locus of Control Scale in order to determine its predictive ability regarding academic achievement at a South African, university and simultaneously to what extent it contributes to the prediction of academic achievement relative to the existing test battery. The study correlates the Rotter Locus of Control Scale with the average grade of first year psychology students for the year 1991. It then correlates the existing first year test battery, which includes an aptitude test, (the SAT), an interest questionnaire (the 19FIQ), a personality questionnaire (PHSF) and a study orientation questionnaire (SSHA) with academic achievement. This correlation is compared with that obtained with the Rotter Locus of Control with regard to academic achievement. The study also determines what the Rotter Scale contributes in addition to the instruments in the existing test battery. The literature study consisted of a definition of the concept locus of control and discussion of behaviour characteristics, the classification of approaches to the measurement of personality traits such as locus of control and the standardisation of psychometric tests with reference to predictive validity. A random sample of 100 subjects were used in the study, focusing on subjects who were enrolled for the first year psychology course. The results obtained with regard to the predictive validity of the Rotter Locus of Control Scale were not favourable, but favourable results were obtained for the sub-components of the instruments of the existing test battery since a positive correlation was found. The results also show that the Rotter Locus of Control Scale does not make a substantial contribution with regard to the prediction of academic achievement relative to the existing assessment battery. The general conclusion is that the Rotter Locus of Control Scale, as a unidimensional construct, should not be used with regard to the prediction of academic achievement, but could possibly be helpful with regard to the prediction of occupational success as certain researchers have found in the past. en
