dc.description.abstract The hypothesis proposed by this study is that a dictionary based on semantic principles will create a completely new perspective in the study of a language. Only the semantic interpretation of a word will be given by such a dictionary and no additional matter will be added to the meaning of a word. Attention was paid to the theoretical background in the first part of this study. The theory of a dictionary, what a word is and the true meaning of a word, was discussed. How this meaning of a word manifests itself in a traditional dictionary was then studied. This was followed by an investigation into a new approach to the manifestation of the meaning in the dictionary - a dictionary which is based on semantic principles. A discussion of these semantic principles was given. Lastly a concept dictionary was compiled with a limited number of entries in order to illustrate the workings of such a semantic-orientated dictionary. The conclusion is that, although the traditional dictionary eventually arrives at the meaning of a word, too much encyclopaedic material is presented as part of a word's meaning. However, this traditional dictionary is not to be scorned, but the time has come when a new and more accurate dictionary which only gives the true meaning of a word, should be brought into being. en
