dc.description.abstract Strategic management is the process whereby a business formulates its long-term mission to ensure that the whole company is aimed at the same corporate goal. In any production process raw materials are an essential input; and to be successful, a company needs a raw material policy that supports the corporate strategy. Langeberg is experiencing problems with the quantity, quality and scheduling of raw materials; and this affects the cost-effectiveness of the production units and the company as a whole. Among farmers there is the perception that Langeberg pays low prices for high-risk produce. As a result the company is often faced with a shortage of raw materials. In a bid to solve the problem, it contracts more and more distant producers; but this leads to high transport costs and decreasing raw material quality. It is proposed that Langeberg change its present raw material strategy. The goal should be to utilize the better farmers who are closer to the factories but who are presently not willing to produce for Langeberg. Transport costs will then be a lot lower, and raw material quality will improve. en
