dc.description.abstract The aim of the research was primarily to determine the attitudes and perceptions of members of certain units of the SA Army towards the recently launched effectiveness improvement programme. Secondary aims were to establish how the core practices were accepted in the work environment, and to make recommendations to improve the programme. Leadership appears from the research to be an important factor determining employee attitudes. The way members of the army view their leaders will determine to a large extent their reaction to the improvement programme. If the leadership is lacking, there is little hope of success. It is concluded that management by objectives is a well-established concept in the army. The management should however be warned that an overemphasis on the reaching of goals may result in neglect of important processes leading to their attainment. The general attitude towards effectiveness improvement seems to be positive. If certain less positive perceptions, as indicated in the study, could be eliminated by appropriate interventions, the result could be a more effective army. en
