dc.description.abstract The purpose of this study was to determine whether a group of farmers exposed to a long drought, suffered more acutely from stress symptomathology than did a group of farmers from another area or a group of non-farmers from the same area. It was found with every instrument used that the farmers afflicted by drought (group 1) showed stress symptomathology more intensely and to a greater extent than the other two groups. A further result was that group 1 experienced the drought as traumatic and showed symptoms of stress disorders. Recommendations are made on the grounds of the results to minimize the negative consequences of stress. en
