dc.description.abstract The management of a small enterprise is not an easy task. To be successful a business must comply better with the requirements of its target market than its competitors; and strategic planning can be used to stay competitive. The primary purpose of this study was to develop a model for the selection and implementation of a strategy for production in a small manufacturing enterprise in the engineering sector. Only two strategies, the defender and the prospector, are suitable for such an enterprise. Worksheets are developed that the owner/manager can use to analyze the external and internal situation of the business. Its current strategy is determined by using variables and indicators. Numeric values on a ten-point scale are given to the variables for each of the strategies. For each variable the owner/manager selects the most appropriate option for his business. The model then indicates which of the two successful strategies the business should follow, and suggests how it should be implemented. en
