dc.description.abstract It is apparent that the child suffering from leukaemia is not fully understood and that teaching staff find the handling of him/her difficult due to much ignorance about the disease. The leukaemia sufferer is subjected to vigorous treatment schedules with short-term and long-term effects. The child in his/her totality is affected by the illness and the treatment procedures. This emphasizes the responsibility of the school for the successful reintegration and support of the patient so that he/she may become a worthy, well-adjusted and respected member of society. This study found that the adolescent leukaemia sufferer experiences adjustment problems within the family and at school, and is dependent on accompaniment within both environments. en
