dc.description.abstract Credit in agriculture is at a high level, and judicious limitation of it is necessary to reduce the risk involved. The object of this study was to develop an additional instrument to evaluate the risk of granting credit by a grain co-operative. The research comprised internal case studies, analyses, a literature survey, and an investigation into the credit policy of a selected grain co-operative. Particular attention was drawn to the state-guaranteed credit scheme. Consequences of the scheme were over financing and injudicious credit: the grain co-operative paid little attention to the individual performance of the farmer, since the state accepted responsibility to pay irrecoverable debts. There is no room for injudicious financing in the present economic climate; the implications for the economy at large of the use of faulty criteria in agricultural financing are far-reaching. Because 67 % of the financing of the cost of production takes place before the commencement of the production process, care should be taken that this 67 % is covered by 100 % security. The remaining 33 % should be granted on condition that crop estimates are sufficient to cover production costs. en
